The 30-Day Test Drive

You took the free class. Then nothing happened.

You liked it. Most people who take a free class here do. You left a little wrecked, a little proud of yourself, intending to come back.

Then Monday happened. Then the next Monday. Then it had been long enough that coming back felt like it needed an explanation.

One class was never enough to decide on.

You didn't know where to put your shoes. You didn't know anyone's name. You spent most of that hour watching the person next to you to figure out what you were supposed to be doing.

That's not a class, that's an orientation with a workout attached. Then we asked you for a real decision.

A free class is a sample. It is not a trial.

And the other reason.

"I'll get in better shape first, then I'll come back."

Nobody has ever done that. Nobody gets in shape and then starts. The getting in shape is the thing you start.

One of our students began at 53, after 35 years of smoking, in what she calls "pretty much the same shape as a bowl of jello, without the stamina." Another started at 65. They're both still here. That's the entire list of qualifications.

Thirty days is where skill actually shows up.

Three times a week is roughly 12 classes.

By class four you stop watching the person next to you. By class eight you throw a punch that's actually yours: hips in it, weight behind it, no thinking required. By day 30 you can break a wrist grab, defend a choke from the front, get off the ground without panicking, and put an elbow where it needs to go.

You will not rise to the level of your expectations. You will fall to the level of your training. In a real attack your conscious brain is offline for the first few seconds and your body runs whatever programs are already installed. One class installs nothing. Thirty days installs something.

And what gets installed is self-defense, not fighting. Fighting is two people who both agreed. Self-defense is when you didn't agree to anything and have about a second to do something about it.

Be prepared, not paranoid. Same motto for 25 years.

Come three times. If you're not glad you did, we refund it.

Three isn't arbitrary. It's the class where you stop being the new person.

If it still isn't for you after that, tell the front desk on your way out and we'll refund the $97 that day. No form, no phone call, no "let me get my manager." Keep the shirt. It's yours either way.
